For more than 25 years, Youth Tennis Advantage's (YTA) unique program has helped thousands of children and teens reach important tennis and academic milestones. During this time tennis and academic programs have evolved, and the number of sites increased, enabling YTA to provide more programming to more children. The direct impact that YTA has provided families results in their children's ability to stay focused, productive, and remain active in a safe environment after school. Regardless of whether YTA kids have learned how to hit a consistent cross-court forehand, how to write an English composition that earns an ‘A’, or both, children from all over the bay area who desire and need YTA services and programs, are likely to find them nearby in one of the many YTA program sites listed here:  


Arroyo Viejo Tennis Courts

Located on the campus of Webster Academy in East Oakland, YTA Arroyo Tennis and Academic Enrichment Program instills a great sense of pride and excitement in approximately 25-35 kids per season for the sport of tennis. On the tennis courts, Arroyo kids stay healthy through exercise and fun tennis skills development activities. In the classroom, the kids receive help with their everyday homework. Site Director, Tiffany Elam, leads life skill lessons that are combined on and off court every day.

 

BearTrax

Hellman Tennis Courts & Hass Pavilion

BearTrax is a YTA College Pathway Program, that invites 12-24 kids from YTA Oakland sites to the beautiful campus of UC Berkeley for tennis fun and academic mentors. Led by Coach Thomas White and a dedicated group of UC Berkeley students who took on the challenges of planning and implementing a unique tennis and academic program, BearTrax is designed to provide a motivational college experience for Oakland kids while strengthening their school performance.

 

Bushrod Park

Located in North Oakland, YTA's Bushrod Park site teaches primarily 25-30 elementary school kids on the famed 'Don Budge Tennis Courts' the joys of tennis and the self-confidence that comes with being a tennis player. Thanks to the City of Oakland, the Don Budge Tennis Courts were beautifully resurfaced in June 2008. Site Director Pamela Stewart is dedicated coach and mentor to the Bushrod YTA players.

 

DeFremery Park

Located in West Oakland, the YTA DeFremery site is our newest site. Led by Nathan Jackmon, the DeFremery site provides tennis instruction to 10-20 students from the West Oakland. Coach Jackmon is a former Cal Bear, where he played both singles and doubles under Coach Peter Wright, and has been with YTA since 2000. His experience enables him to develop strong tennis skills in beginning players, and further develop skills in intermediate players. With a core group of dedicated young athletes, DeFremery Park promises to produce several highly talented players in the coming years.

 

**Margaret Hayward Playground (new site replacing Ella Hill Hutch)

The Margaret Hayward Playground program site is YTA’s newest site which replaces the organization's Ella Hill Hutch program site.  And, just like Ella Hill Hutch Recreation Center, Margaret Hayward Playground is located in the heart of the Western Addition near the Tenderloin District in San Francisco. Coach Carl Mendoza leads a skilled group of instructors at the Ella Hill Hutch site. Kids participating in tennis on four tennis courts reflect the diversity of the surrounding low-income and immigrant community. Aside from providing free tennis lessons to the kids, YTA partners with Margaret Hayward Playground Community Center to provide homework assistance, tutoring and life skills activities that include youth leadership opportunities.

 

Hunter's Point GYM/Milton Meyer Recreation Center

195 Kiska Road, San Francisco

Located on the “top of the hill, no one could have guessed that in the heart of the housing projects lies four beautifully kept tennis courts overlooking both downtown San Francisco and Oakland. Working closely with the community and the neighboring Muslim school, YTA Hunters Point has seen interest in tennis rise quickly and is truly an inspiration to the kids in that community and a model for putting together and running a successful program against all odds. Currently over 60 youths come to YTA Hunters Point weekly to play tennis and receive life skills training.

 

Laney College

900 Fallon St., Oakland

The only YTA community site to be housed on a college campus, Laney aims to teach kids the necessary skills to attend college. Aside from basic and intermediate tennis instruction, Laney serves high performing junior players both on and off the courts, and challenges them to achieve their full potential in tennis and in academics. Many YTA youth participating at Laney College have achieved a high sectional ranking with some making a splash on the national junior tennis circuit.

 

Mission Playground

19th & Linda streets, San Francisco

YTA Mission Playground is located in the heart of the San Francisco Mission District. Mission Playground is a true community program where the kids and parents come to a site where they feel welcomed and safe by Coach Tyrone Trono. YTA is currently collaborating with 826 Valencia, a free neighborhood tutorial service that is adjacent to the tennis courts.

 

Mosswood Park

3612 Webster St., Oakland

Home to several academic and tennis champions, on three tennis courts, YTA Mosswood Park and long time YTA Site Director Terry Stewart serves approximately 50 youth year round. Mosswood Park is located near downtown Oakland and is truly a place for scholar athletes. Many of its players have gone on to compete in college on a tennis scholarship. **As of June 2008, YTA has ended all of its programs which operated from the Ella Hill Hutch Recreation Center. However, we have established a new program site in this same community, just two blocks away at the Margaret Hayward Playground.  We look forward to serving you at this new location**
