Sponsors
Corporate & Community Partners to YTA
Youth Tennis Advantage exists due to the generosity of others. We recognize our corporate sponsors and thank them for the support they provide.
Blue Shield of California
Blue Shield of California is a
loyal community sponsor of YTA. YTA is proud to share healthy and interactive
events, such as the annual Marin Doubles and our For the Kids Dinner with the
Bay Area community each year. Those events are made possible by the sponsorship
and support of Blue Shield.
When interviewed recently, Blue
Shield CEO Bruce Bodaken made the ‘connection’ between YTA and Blue Shield as
follows:
How does the mission of Blue
Shield 'connect' to the mission of YTA?
As a not-for-profit health plan committed to ensuring access to quality health
care, we support other organizations that are committed to improving the health
and well being of their communities. Youth Tennis Advantage
provides kids with a great opportunity to stay healthy and have fun at the
same time.
What has Blue Shield gotten from the
sponsorship/support of YTA?
We get the satisfaction of knowing the program has
successfully empowered the lives of children through tennis and academic
tutoring, providing them with the right skills to become leaders in
their communities. We also have visibility at YTA events
and our staff has an opportunity to attend the tournaments.
Are there future ideas on how the two
organizations might work together in the future?
The door is always open for future
collaboration. We are impressed with the work YTA has done to
open doors to new opportunities for children throughout the Bay Area.
Bruce Bodaken also added, “My personal interest in YTA is the kids, kids that would probably not have the chance to enjoy the great sport of tennis and learn essential life skills. YTA creates environments in which kids get the opportunity to excel in sports, education and life. YTA is a unique organization with a deeply dedicated staff making a difference.”

When
one hears the name Kaiser Permanente, one usually thinks of doctors and medical
treatments, but Kaiser Permanente is more than just that. Throughout the years,
Kaiser Permanente has given back and supported numerous local organizations in
many different communities. And as Randy Wittorp, the Public Affairs Director
for Kaiser Permanente San Francisco says, “You can write a book about that!”
Kaiser Permanente is active in health
and education outreach. The organization supports campaigns such as Hep B Free,
HIV/AIDS prevention in San Francisco, and Project Homeless Connect, which is a
one day event linking the homeless to essential services. They are also a
mission driven organization. Wittorp explains that “It is part of our mission
as a health care organization to improve the community’s health, but we also
want to give back to the community that has helped us prosper.”
One way Kaiser Permanente gives back is
through their community grant program, which supports programs such as
community clinics and health education. Another is their sponsorship program,
which is how Kaiser Permanente became involved with Youth Tennis Advantage
(YTA).
Kaiser Permanente first sponsored the
National Junior Tennis and Learning’s (NJTL) Regional Rally, co hosted by YTA
two years ago, and returned as a sponsor again for the 2009 rally. During the
one day event at Golden Gate Park, Kaiser Permanente treated the kids to lunch
and health education. The kids learned fun nutritional facts about the foods
and drinks they consume.
Kaiser Permanente is also the corporate
sponsor for YTA’s video “It Takes a Village.” According to Wittorp,
Kaiser Permanente chose YTA as one of its partner organization because YTA ties
both academics and athletics to support at-risk youths. He said, “We feel
that it is important to get out there to be physically active and get the
exercise we need to be healthy, but it is also important to encourage children
to exceed academically. YTA’s approach is really not a common one.
Kaiser
Permanente’s support of YTA goes beyond just sponsorship. Recently, Lois
Richtand, the Communication Manager at Kaiser Permanente joined YTA’s Board of
Directors. She first became involved with YTA through the Regional Rally two
years ago; she attended the rally for couple of hours and liked what she saw.
This year, Richtand spent a full day at the rally and saw the wonderful
interactions kids had with their coaches and other participants, so she decided
to get more involved. Richtand explains that during the board meetings
she is in “learning mode” and looks forward to the New Year where the board
begins to plan for the upcoming months. We at YTA look forward to our
future endeavors with Kaiser Permanente.
